This 6 day workshop will help you to build a small-size earth building by yourself using earth, sand, straw, wood, stones, and gravel. You will learn two techniques: earth bricks (adobe) and Cob. The workshop is focused on practise although we will provide the necessary theory inputs for each technique. It covers the following topics:
- Introduction to natural building
- Thermal mass and insulation
- Passive cooling and heating
- Demonstration of insulating walls made with rice husk bags
- Alternative foundations
- Making a gravel bags foundation
- Earth testing; making earth mix
- Building practise (adobe and cob)
- Plastering techniques
Prior experience or a background in construction is NOT required.
You will be given a USB memory stick containing a summary of the training materials including additional documents (PDF files, Videos) and useful links if you wish to learn further.
The course will be held at our centre, 25 kms south of Chiang Rai, and will have a maximum of 8 participants.
Trainer: Alain Madec, natural builder and founder of ‘Baan Din Doi’.
Course schedule: 8.30 to 18.00 with several breaks; Lunch break: 12.00 to 14.00

We will provide you with:
- a simple accommodation in a tent and a comfortable mattress,
- a hammock, a chair and a small table
- an area to play volley-ball or badminton
Wifi and 220 V electricity are available.
All meals will be vegetarian food with some meat and fish options.
We ask all participants to refrain from any illegal drug use or excessive drinking in our centre.
7,500 baht/person (approximately 210 euros, 240 USD) including instruction, accommodation, all meals during the course, pick-up and drop-off at the Chiang Rai airport or bus terminals.
