Our outdoor kitchen, made from earth

Our kitchen, built in 2020-2021, is a good example of simplicity, convenience, and coolness.

The story… Built during the COVID-19 lockdown, it wasn’t simple to hire skilled workers or specific materials due to the transportation restrictions. The original plan to build the walls only with earth had to be adapted, and some portions were made with fired clay-cement red bricks, or wood reused from our previous kitchen.

  • Walls: earth adobe bricks, wattle-and-daub, wood, fired red bricks (soil and cement)
  • Roof: zinc (planned to be replaced by a more insulated material)
  • Pole and beam structure: steel bars
  • Foundation: concrete (30 cm above ground level), acting as a barrier for termites.
  • Plastering and decoration: soil of different colors, earth paint

Bio-climatic design

We chose a few elements of design to allow the kitchen users to enjoy a rather cool temperature every hour of the day, in every season:

  • Partly shaded by bamboo
  • Cross-ventilation for air flow (several openings)
  • One electric fan inside

A roof made of another material will be installed to better cool down the kitchen

Cost: 42,000 Thai baths (1,300 USD ; 1,100 Euros)

  • Materials (including electrical items, doors and windows; except furniture) 18,000
  • Labor (*) 9,000
  • Foundation 5,000
  • Steel structure 10,000
