What Is Earth Building?
Earth building is a natural method of creating homes using soil, sand, natural fiber (e.g. straw), and water. It is one of the oldest and most sustainable construction methods in the world, known for its strength, comfort, and a deep feeling of being connected to nature.
Earth homes stay naturally cool in hot weather and warm in cold season.
They regulate humidity, are free from toxic chemicals, which make them very healthy to live in.
Earth walls are strong and long-lasting. There are several techniques to build. Some are old and traditional, perfect to be done by hand, but they requires efforts and labour. Some have been modernised to achieve a project by using machines (less labour, faster and cheaper) and some may even fit with building standards.
Well-designed, an earth building doesn’t require a lot of energy (no air-con needed!). Living in a earth building is an invitation for simplicity. If you reflect on the reasonable size, the level of comfort necessary, if you limit labour by using machines etc this may even make the cost relatively affordable. The success in an earth home construction relies on a careful design and planning, to avoid several mistakes, failures in the future leading to maintenance and extra expenses. The good living conditions in an earth home will rely on using external factors (sun, wind, vegetation, trees etc). This bio-climatic approach will bring thermal comfort (cool in hot weather, warm in cold seasons) as well as preventing mold and humidity issues.
